Year in industry group video Ed East: So, I did my internship at SAP. I actually worked in the services sector so we essentially acted like consultants but I was able to introduce myself to very senior executives at the company that as a result given me the opportunity to come back as a graduate the following year. Ekta Ahira: I was based at General Electric in Aberdeen. I was doing project management being thrown into like a real world situation for the first time and it was such a fast-paced environment, so having to pick up things quite fast, it definitely gives you exposure into the industry that you want to go into and even if it's not like the role you see yourself going into, it confirms what you do want to get into. So it gives you more experience and when you come back it definitely gives you more motivation. Chris Lam: I did my year in industry in Cisco, California. I was doing product management so I was the product management intern in the Cisco's developer group where we were essentially evangelising Cisco's products to developers worldwide. The best bit about my year in industry honestly I think is just the location, um since I was in California and just south of San Francisco, it was a really inspiring place to be and yeah I just tried to make the most of my time there and learned so much and develop new interests that I had no idea that I would develop. Direna Rugnato: So my year in industry was local at Medway council. I was supporting with the digital transformation that the council was having. The best bit was the projects I worked on. One of the projects was the social care mobile working project where I was supporting the transformation in the children and adults directorate. I'd recommend a year in industry just because it gives you a lot of exposure to a working life. Sai Adavi: So, I chose to do my year industry at HSBC in Hong Kong. My team structure was overall cloud service management. Within that I mainly produced statistical dashboards and monthly management information. The fact that I did get the opportunity to go to Hong Kong and I met so many different people from different cultures and backgrounds and that my team was really supportive over there. I'd say that it really does prepare you for your graduate job application process and also it really helps you find the direction for yourself. Jamie Bushby: So, I did my my placement at G-Power, which is a subsidiary of GE General Electric. So, essentially my role was I would say data analysis. I'd be in a team that took loads of information in from all sorts of places. A group project we worked on as an intern project, the reason why it was so good was because we were having a real impact on the business I believe. Biggest reason I'd tell people to do the year in industry because real world experience, the skills you learn, the people you meet, the projects you get to work on, they're all character building, they all improve your skill set. They all prepare you for life after university.
